Pet Policy

What is Qantas Airlines Pet Policy?

A specialized environment is needed for pets. You may not be able to book pets on most flights because not all Qantas aircraft are well-equipped. No issues. You can book your pet on Qantas Freight. Here are a few things you must take care of.

  • Arrange a suitable crate for your pet - IATA-approved crates for Qantas pet flights ensure safe travel.
  • Prepare the documentation for your pet - Depending on the destination, you will need documents.

If the flight has connections, you must be aware of the minimum connecting time allowed. Our Air1Network will take you through Qantas pet policy.

How do you Book a Pet on Qantas Airlines?

A pet travel specialist of Qantas Freight may be able to help you book a pet. For international travel, a specialist is recommended due to complex regulations. You may have to contact a Qantas Freight-approved pet travel specialist if your pet is brachycephalic or snub-nosed. Qantas recommends that you make your pet familiar with the crate environment. You can acquire the crate from the airline up to 24 hours before departure. And keep the pet in the crate till the time it is checked on a flight. This will help your pet adjust to the new environment easily. Just go through the check-list of Qantas dog travel to ensure you haven't miss anything. Here are the primary things on the check-list.

  • Make sure you have the right crate - You will need a slightly large crate for snub-nosed or brachycephalic breeds.
  • Age of the pet - Pets below 12 weeks will not qualify. Pets above 12 years will require an examination.
  • You must have the details of crate size and weight - This will be needed at the time of booking your pet. The combined weight should be less than 50kg. You will have to call the airline for those exceeding 50kg.
  • Book your pet before booking your flight - This is important since the space is limited for pets on flight. Service is subject to availability.

A pet travel specialist approved by Qantas Freight may have to be hired for international flights. Feel free to visit or contact Air1Network for assistance with booking a pet.

What are the Charges for Pet Travel on Qantas?

The carrier does not list specific pet transport charges online. But you will have to pay freight charges when you book your pet through Qantas Freight. Qantas pet travel cost will include the cost of crate. The carrier will provide you crates of small and medium size for a charge. You will have to pay up to $10 to acquire them from the airport. Here are a few things you can remember about charges.

  • Qantas international pet travel cost is higher because of long-duration flights.
  • If your pet or animal needs larger crates, you will have to pay more.
  • Service dogs are not charged, but they must be licensed.

Does my Pet qualify for Travel on Qantas?

Pets may require an examination by a pet travel specialist. If your dog is brachycephalic or snub-nosed, a pet travel specialist will examine and approve the travel. Pets over 12 years old also require a clearance. They may be more vulnerable to the stress associated with noise, take-off and landing. On flights making connections to international destinations, you will have to book the pet with a pet travel specialist. The minimum connection time on a domestic flight is 2 hours. Qantas requires 120 minutes to transfer your pet safely from one aircraft to the next at a few airports in Australia including Brisbane and Sydney. For all other airports, 90 minutes is required. Lesser connection time is not allowed on Qantas Freight. Qantas pet flights may be restricted for the below pets.

  • Active racing greyhounds will not be accepted.
  • A few dog breeds classified as ‘dangerous animals’ under Australian federal legislation.
  • Service dogs are allowed, but only if they have a license. Ambassador dogs, therapy dogs, emotional support dogs, comfort dogs and facility dogs may not be allowed.

You may need documentation and specialized crates for dog travel on Qantas. Air1Network can be visited or contacted for further details and assistance with relocating a pet with Qantas.
