What is The Pet Policy for Delta Airlines?

When you have a pet with whom you wish to travel on your trip, you should know about the pet policy of the airline and when you are flying with Delta, you should be well acquainted with Delta Airlines Pet Policy.

You can bring your pet policy in three methods on Delta flights:

  • In the cabin.
  • As checked baggage.
  • Shipped as cargo.

Eligibility to travel in the passenger cabin for your pets

Following are the criteria that should be met for your pet to travel in the cabin as per the Delta Airlines Pet Policy:

  • Your pet has to comfortably fit in a kennel under the seat directly in front of you. Maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by your Delta flights.
  • You can contact the Delta Reservations team at 1-800-221-1212 to know about the size restrictions of your pet’s kennel.
  • Your pet must remain inside the kennel throughout the Delta flight, boarding area, and in the airport lounge.
  • Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old.
  • You must be traveling within the United States (except for Hawaii), Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • Your pet can comfortably sit and stand in the kennel throughout the flight.
  • Your pet must be a domesticated bird, dog, or cat to travel in the cabin.
  • You have all the necessary health documents for your pet which are required by your destination.
  • You cannot have more than one pet per journey. However, there is an exception to that, two similar types of pets may be allowed in one kennel. But they must be small enough to fit in one kennel provided they are comfortable, compatible, same size, species, and are meeting all the requirements.
  • If your flight ticket is issued on or after February 14, 2012, then your pet is not permitted in the Business Class cabin for any international flights.

How many Pets are Allowed on your Delta Flight?

According to the Delta Airlines Pet Policy, the restrictions are based on the class type you have.

First Class: you have 2 pets limit.

Business Elite Class: 2 pets limit.

Main Cabin Class: 4 pets limit.

Eligibility to travel as the checked baggage for your pets:

What are the Requirements for the Kennel on Delta Flights?

Along with the restrictions on size and weight, the USDA and Delta Airlines need the kennels to meet the following enlisted requirements to be accepted by the airline:

  • It must be created out of rigid plastic, metal, wood, or some other material of comparable strength to solid roofs.
  • There must be no cardboard kennels.
  • It must have wheels that can become inoperable at wish (for the kennels with wheels only).
  • It must have functional handles that can prevent the tilting effect and any direct contact with your pets.
  • It must be closed securely but must not be locked.
  • Must have a label with the line “Live Animal” in letters which must be at least 1 inch tall on the crate’s top and at one other side of the kennel.
  • Must have arrow labels showing the correct upward position of the kennel so that there is no inconvenience to your pet resulting from confusion.
  • The bedding of the kennel must be of absorbing quality.
  • Must have two dishes, one for water and another for food which has to be attached to the inside of the kennel door so that it is easily accessible to Delta helpers to serve food to your pets without opening the door of the kennel.
  • Feeding instructions must be provided at the top of the kennel along with your details.
  • It must not be made entirely out of wire mesh, wicker, cardboard, collapsible materials, or welded mesh.

What health documents are required as per Delta Airlines Pet Policy?

Even though Delta Airlines Pet Policy does not state that you require a health certificate for your pet to travel in the cabin or as a checked bag, few states and countries do. As it is your responsibility to be well acquainted with the regulations, you must consult your vet and confirm if your pet complies with all the requirements.

Now, if your pet is traveling as cargo then the health certificate is mandatory. You can call Pet First at 1-888-SEND-PET (888-736-3738) to know more about the requirements.
