Pet Policy

What is The Pet Policy for United Airlines?

When you book your perfect vacation plan, your itinerary is colored with all the major attractions but something feels missing. Your family member who has different blood than you (and probably has 4 paws) should not miss out on a family trip.

When you fly with United Airlines, you can bring your pets with you on your trip and their revamped Pet Policy works in the favor of you and your pet. This article is dedicated to providing you with information on United Airlines Pet Policy.

The United Airlines Pet Policy

As per the pet policy of United Airlines, your pet can travel via three methods:

  • In the Cabin.
  • As checked baggage.
  • Shipped as cargo.

When they are transported as cargo and checked baggage, they are in well-pressurized and temperature-controlled areas.

In the Cabin

Your pet has to meet the following criteria to travel with you in the cabin:

  • Only cats, dogs, or household birds (parakeet, canary, or finch) that are domesticated may be accepted to be in the cabin.
  • Your pet has to be at least 8 weeks old.
  • Cats and dogs have to be fully weaned.
  • Your pet can remain comfortable in its kennel, under the seat throughout the flight.
  • The kennel in which the pets will travel must meet the airline’s requirements.
  • Your pet has the necessary health documents required by the airline.
  • Your pet has to travel on the same plane as you (the owner).

As Checked Baggage

Your pet has to meet the following criteria to travel as checked baggage:

  • Only cats, dogs, household birds (parakeet, canary, or finch), guinea pigs, rabbits, or hamsters that are domesticated may be accepted as checked baggage.
  • Your pet (for dogs and cats) has to be at least 8 weeks old.
  • Cats and dogs have to be fully weaned.
  • The kennel in which the pets will travel must meet the airline’s requirements.
  • Your pet has the necessary health documents required by the airline.
  • Due to severe weather conditions, United Airlines will not be accepting any pets as checked baggage when the flights travel from or to Bahrain (BAH) or Kuwait (KWI) from the date of May 1 to September 30.

Shipped as Cargo

If the mentioned criteria for traveling in the cabin or as checked baggage does not make you feel that your pet meets the requirements then your pet can be shipped as Cargo. For such cases, you may contact United Airlines Cargo at 1-800-UA-CARGO to get assistance.

How much does it cost to transport my pet on United Airlines flights?

The charge involved in transporting your pet on the United Airlines flights is USD 125 for each way and you will have to pay an additional charge of USD 125 each time your flight has a stopover of more than 4 hours within the US or more than 24 hours outside the US.

This should be noted that your pets cannot be in the cabin from, to, or through the following locations:

  • Australia, Barbados, Cuba, Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iceland, Marshall Islands, Panama, Palau, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Tahiti, Ireland, Trinidad and Tobago, and the UK.
